Prevent Blindness (https://preventblindness.org) is the nation’s leading volunteer eye health and safety organization dedicated to fighting blindness and saving sight. Prevent Blindness came to First Result Media needing help with their Google Search Ranking. Their goal was to generate more traffic to the website. Increases in website traffic help Prevent Blindness further its mission of eye health through increased donations and grants.
The first step of any SEO campaign is to do keyword research. You can’t start any search engine marketing/optimization campaign if you don’t know the keywords people are searching for. Sometimes it is surprising to learn that odd terms and even misspellings are commonly searched over what you may have thought was the ideal phrase to find a product or service in Google. By digging into the data and pulling thousands of keywords related to the PreventBlindness.org website, we were able to examine what people are searching for and determine the most relevant keywords that balance a high monthly search volume combined with low competition.
“After only eight months of working with First Result Media, Prevent Blindness’s Google search traffic increased from 151,118 users the previous year to 235,556 users (in the last six months of 2022), a 55.88% increase!”
Our research identified 28 keyword categories, and for each category, we located around 100 keywords, for a total of about 2800. We then analyzed the monthly search volume, competition, and relevancy to the PreventBlindness.org website and narrowed the final list to 104 keywords.
Now that we know what keywords to target, we must start working with the PreventBlindness.org website. PreventBlindness.org was already a mature and authoritative site, but it needed to be tuned to rank for the keywords we discovered in the research phase. To do this, content needs to be altered and, in some cases, created, and new pages must be built.
Each month we met with Prevent Blindness to analyze the site ranking reports, discuss progress, and go over our plan for the upcoming month. During this meeting, we share our recommendations for what content needs to be created that month. PreventBlindness.org needed many new pages created so that we could attempt to rank them for the keywords on our list.
We assisted Prevent Blindness with developing an eye terms glossary (a catch-all to target many of the associated medical terms). One of our keywords was a common misspelling of a prevalent eye disease (with 250,000 monthly searches), and we added this to the glossary clarifying the correct term and providing a definition and links to helpful resources within the PreventBlindness.org website. After adding this misspelled keyword to the glossary, it started to rank on the second page of Google because we discovered this keyword in our research and created a page for it.
One of Prevent Blindness’s goals was to rank better for solar eclipse-related keywords. We’ve learned that looking at a solar eclipse without proper safety equipment is never safe, and helping Prevent Blindness spread this message about eye safety was a no-brainer. We recommended creating a solar eclipse section to provide more Solar Eclipse information; this included displaying the next solar eclipse, a history of recent Solar Eclipses, and a forecast for the upcoming solar eclipses through 2026. We also added definitions of all of the relevant terms. Adding this content helped the website rank in Google for solar eclipse glasses-related keywords, which helps promote the use of the proper safety eyewear when viewing solar eclipses.
After we had all of the newly created website content and added the pages needed to help Prevent Blindness rank for the keywords on our list, it was time to begin building links back to pages on the website. We focused on getting articles featured on prominent authority blogs and websites monthly. We determined which keywords to use and what pages on the website these blog articles should link to. Combining this approach with social engagement and directory submissions, we were able to start Prevent Blindness on the road to becoming an SEO success story!
When we started providing SEO services to Prevent Blindness, their website ranked in Google for 16 keywords out of the 104 on our list. The PreventBlindness.org website now ranks for 42 keywords on our list. Representing a 150% increase in the amount of keyword search markets that we have been able to help Prevent Blindness enter.
After only eight months of working with First Result Media, Prevent Blindness’s Google search traffic increased from 151,118 users the previous year to 235,556 users (in the last six months of 2022), a 55.88% increase!
